T&T’s Cleopatra Borel came good again yesterday, to earn second spot in the Women’s shot put at the Spitzen meeting in Lucerne, Switzerland, with a second-round effort of 18.43 metres at the Allmend Stadium.
The local field specialist finished behind New Zealand’s Valerie Adams, a four-time World and two-time Olympic champion, who won with a best toss of 19.37, reached in the third round.
Third was Geisa Arcanjo of Brazil with a 17.67 effort.
Borel was some mere metres off her season’s best 18.78, which she achieved on her first attempt at the Birmingham Diamond League some two weeks ago. Winning then was American Tia Brooks (19.73) and second was Adams (19.63).
Jehue Gordon also faced the starter at the Switzerland meet in the men’s 400m hurdles event and clocked 52.00 seconds to place sixth in heat B in the timed event.
Of the 16 runners taking part, Gordon had the 14th best time.
Crossing first was in that heat was Rasmus Magi of Estonia in 49.95, followed by Great Britains’ David Greene in 50.02 and Cornell Fredericks (South Africa) in 50.15.
Karim Hussein of Switzerland had the best time overall with 49.47. He was followed by American Jeshua Anderson in 49.51 and Abdelmalik Lahoulou of Algeria in 49.80. The trio competed in the heat A.
Tomorrow, Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott heads to the historical Stockholm Olympic Stadium in Sweden, to compete in the men’s javelin at the Bauhaus-galan, the eighth stop of the IAAF Diamond League series.
Walcott coming off a third place finish with a season’s best 86.35m at the previous elite meet at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games in Oslo.
He will attempt to upstage the likes of German Thomas Rohler, who won in Oslo with a world leading distance of 89.30m and in Shanghai (85.71), Ihab Abdelrahman of Egypt, the winner of the fourth leg in Eugene, Oregon, USA and Kenyan Julius Yego, the 2015 World champion.
